HHBC Applies for Impactful $2 Million ATIIP Grant

July 18th 2024

Yesterday marked a huge occasion in the restoration process of the Historic Harmar Bridge! Not only months, but years of effort between at least 6 different organizations, more than 45 individuals, countless surveys and an estimated $200,000 in inspections and designs efforts, came together to submit a $2 Million Grant Request to the United States Department of Transportation, Active Transportation Infrastructure Investment Program (ATIIP). If awarded, this grant would kick off an 18 month cycle moving us through the final designs for construction and necessary inspections. This would be the last step before physical construction of the Harmar Bridge could begin.

Our partners have put together a very compelling, deeply thorough and incredibly thoughtful proposal and we are feeling hopeful for the future of the bridge. The restoration and rehabilitation process, especially where grant funding is concerned, is not a sprint, it is a marathon and will take collaboration and partnership of entities such as The City of Marietta, The Triple W, Buckeye Hills Regional Council, City and County Health Departments, Washington County Engineer, Southeastern Ohio Port Authority, Marietta Community Foundation, American StructurePoint and many others for years to come.

We deeply appreciate the support and enthusiasm our Community and many others have shown us. It not only fuels us but shows just how vital this structure is for the health, happiness and economy of Marietta, Ohio. When a community shows up and continues to let our state, local and federal governments know just how important a project such as this one is, it makes us a more appealing recipient to grant funding. Approved projects such as the Levee Project and Connected Marietta breathe more life into other area projects, and we are watching that happen in real time.

There are many ways in which you can help us and other local area projects garner support and attention: attend your local council meetings, fill out surveys that are posted by local area groups, attend fundraisers, info sessions or board meetings and most importantly volunteer your free time to help!
